Boo, hiss, technology

I won't bore anyone with my computer problems, but suffice it to say that I can't get the audio to save in Vista. So I'm transcribing the LD bit here.

Me: What'd you say to Pat?
LD: (pause) I'd rather not repeat it.
You guys exchanged jerseys at the end?
LD: Yeah. That's part of the game. If someone's going to take a cheap shot at me, then I would suggest not to, because it got me riled up.
Do you play better that way?
LD: I don't know if I played better. I maybe played a little more energized, because the adrenaline was pumping, but at that point in the game, I think that was going to happen anyway, because we were getting frustrated with things and that kind of added fuel to it.
So bottom line, was it a straight shoulder-to-shoulder?
LD: There are a lot of shoulder-to-shoulders that still get called. In that context, where it's nowhere near the ball, as I'm running full-speed, to just put his elbow out and shove me, I don't think that's too fair. I know if I did that on the other end, I'd get called for it, so you've got to go both ways.
Did it feel good, then, to get that goal in, while he was hanging over you?
LD: Not only that, but I don't know if you saw the replay, but he was grabbing and holding me. They were doing a lot of that the whole game. If someone defends well and defends fairly, I tip my hat and say, congratulations, but if you're going stand and grab me and pull me and tug at me all day, I'm going to let you know about it when I do score.

Tkhanks, Andrea. Your perseverance and determination to find out the answers and get them to us is commendable! Good luck on your computer problems.

Oh, and good on you, too, Landon.

Landon is so soft. Pulling, grabbing, pushing, etc are part of defending. Stop complaining and get on with it....

He better not go to Serie A, he'd cry after one practice....

Don't agree with Landon on this one. Tugging, pulling, unfair play when the ref isn't looking is all apart of soccer. You don't get paid 900k to play a non-contact sport, so deal with it. I think it was unprofessional to behave like that. Let your play do the talking.

Great blog Andrea!

I'm with Lando - Houston's back four are dirtbags. Ianni can't keep up with the guy so he fouls.

just another one of you said...

I think Landon is a bad ass for ripping into him after scoring. Sounds like he has a point, Ianni tried every trick and still couldn't stop him. This is competition folks, and the winners have the right to relish their achievements in the opponents face. Plus it wasn't like he shoved the guy.

If tugging and unfair play are fair as long as no one sees it, then gloating after putting in a sweet ass goal should be too.

Hey Bean Town squids, get off Fanchino. I'm suprised whoever is posting this crap even knows what soccer is. Nice legit website by the way. Sounds like any of that site's "readers" could have easily done what they claim J. Franchino did and probably do much worse. Also sounds like they are really bid Rev/soccer fans too. Go back to the porn sites and consider not commenting about soccer until you're out of puberty. Andrea and Luis, thanks for this blog, but how about shoring up/securing the site a little better.

It looked like Landon had legitmate gripes throughout the match. Ianni should have gotten a card for that chuck outside the box, and really for the contact on LD's first goal(a penalty if he didn't score). Landon probably should have gotten one for the taunting, but no call either. A Make-up? I wish LD didn't exchange shirts with Ianni though. That's kind of like a handshake and an "It's cool man," and lessens his point, but, sportsman-like, I guess. Well, it all came out in the wash anyway.

I thought Franchino played well and helped fire up the Gals. Maybe he's still got a little left in the tank afterall.

It wasn't the best of responses (which would have been to just score the great goals and leave it at that). However , if someone goes out there and repeatedly hits you off the ball or otherwise takes cheap shots throughout the game I am not going to begrudge LD going over and telling a defender they need to do better after he loses them on a hard nosed diving-header. So in summation levels of class

1)Ignore the player thuging it up and score some goals

2)Ignore the player thuging it up, score some goals, talk trash during the run of play.

3)Ignore the player, score goals, demonstrably point out that the defense they had been playing just wasn't good enough.

4) Talk trash the whole game whether you do anything or not.

5) Take cheap shots at the other player in return. Clummsy tackles stepping on heels etc.

6) Punch the player in the mouth.

As you can see LD took the middle ground here. I won't fault him for the outburst.

Thanks for the Landon quotes, AC. From the HDC stands, his explanation is EXACTLY what we all saw. If you were at the game, you understood why he "taunted" Patrick - he fooking deserved it. The press box is not a good indication of the over HDC feeling about the matter ...because well, I'd rather not say, but to be honest, you and LB are two of the only soccer writers I trust. It's funny that he still gets this LANDYCAKES crap from idiots no matter what he does. He will never be able to win with some people.

Seems to me he got on with it rather well...

Thanks! Between the two of you, we now have both LD's and Ianni's side of the story. Sounds like it's pretty much resolved itself.
